by Press Release

Charlotte's Web for the Performing Arts will present "Woodstock: Long Time Gone - An Evening of Peace and Music" performed by the Dean Moriarty Jazz Band on Saturday, April 29, at 8 p.m. at the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center, 415 N. Church St., Rockford, Ill.

The concert will feature instrumental arrangements of music from the iconic 1969 festival and original compositions inspired by the event. Fresh takes on "Freedom," "Fortunate Son," "Purple Haze," and others will be mixed with premieres of new music composed by the band.

The quintet will take advantage of the concert format to incorporate staging and lighting effects, ambient sound, and guest artists into a unique experience unlike their usual club or festival appearances.

Named for the off-beat character in Jack Kerouac's On the Road, The Dean Moriarty Jazz Band has played for more than a decade in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin. Their repertoire of dynamic, original compositions and jazz standards covers styles ranging from straight-ahead jazz and bebop to Latin and contemporary sounds.

The band was awarded Platinum Best of Rockford at the 2005 On the Waterfront Festival, and includes RAMI Hall of Fame members. They are: Chris Hyatt, keyboard; Dan Kasten, drums; Jeff Layng, trumpet; Phil Pilcher, saxophone; and Tim Shafer, bass.

Concert admission is $10. Tickets will be available at the door, or may be purchased in advance at: Rockford Area Arts Council, 713 E. State St.; The Tin Whistle, 1414 N. Main St.; and Postal Shop locations at 1643 N. Alpine Rd. and 2205 S. Perryville Rd.

Co-sponsors of the event are Northern Public Radio station WNIJ 89.5 and Rockford Peace and Justice Action Committee. For additional information, go to www.deanmjazz.com or call 815-964-2238.
