Indiana’s Umphrey’s McGee is a unique musical beast. It’s also one that’s sure to please fans of the Grateful Dead and similar jam bands while also piquing the interest of progressive rock aficionados. That’s not always such an easy combination to pull off, but Umphrey’s McGee make it seem a simple business.

Dekalb’s Egyptian theater will play host to the musical epiphany that is Umphrey’s McGee on April 8th, so you’ve got time to familiarize yourself. If you are a fan of either the progressive rock genre (bands like King Crimson, Pink Floyd and Yes), jam bands (The Grateful Dead, Phish, etc.) or both you should not miss this show. Having appeared at Lollapalooza and Bonnaroo, Umphrey’s McGee are no strangers to large crowds, but the Egyptian Theater’s more intimate setting is sure to be a bonus for those in attendance.

Formed in South Bend, Indiana in the late 1990’s, Umphrey’s McGee has built a reputation as a band who can deliver both in the studio and in the live concert arena. The number of musical artists who can say that these days is sadly limited. The band’s first album was released in 1998 and since then they’ve been pleasing crowds and critics (Rolling Stone Magazine, usually a hard sell, tipped them in their Hot Issue in 2004 on the strength of their Anchor Drops disc). Again, getting nods from both fans and journalists is not often an easy balance.

Umphrey’s McGee has consistently shown themselves to be able acrobats. They walk the fine line between progressive rock and jam band sounds with an agility often reserved for high wire acts. They please the listening public while setting the critic’s hearts afire, as well. They show that you can be adept at playing in the live venue while still producing quality studio albums. Now, it’s your turn to be part of the adventure that is Umphrey’s McGee. You can check them out at http://www.umphreys.com.
