Charlotte's Web For the Performing Arts Brings Ember Swift to Rockford

Does anyone remember the days when music (at least the really “cool” music) was tied to political activism and fighting for causes? Well, if you just answered that question by saying, “I do,” Ember Swift will be a breath of fresh air and nostalgia all at once for you.

Swift has been performing since she was ten and started writing songs at the tender age of nine.  She discovered political activism (particularly as it relates to environmental issues) in high school and the two passions were merged. The combination of musical artistry and drive to work for a cause led her, as one might imagine, into the world of folk music.

This is not the folk music of the 1960’s, though. It has plenty of modern musical elements in the mix and such styles as reggae, soul and R & B show up throughout. Personally, I’m reminded quite a bit of early Blondie at times. The thing is, what’s always present is a duo of strong song writing and great musical performance. It’s a combination that will captivate, and through the lyrics, motivate. Making the world a better place, isn’t that what music should be about?

Charlotte’s Web For the Performing Arts is bringing Ember Swift to the Mendelssohn PAC on Saturday the 16th of February at 8 PM. The Mendelssohn PAC is located at 415 N. Church Street. Tickets are $15 in advance and $18 at the door. You can get your tickets online at www.charlotteswebconcerts.com. You can also buy them at Rockford Area Arts Council, 713 E. State 815 963-6765; both of The Postal Shoppe locations (in the Edgebrook Center, 815 397-7301 and 2205 S. Perryville, 815 484-0940); The Kilt & Clover, 1414 N. Main, 815 962-5458; and JustGoods, 201 7th St, 815 965-8903.

Wherever you buy your tickets, do buy some tickets and make this show. If you are one of those people who bemoans the fact that music doesn’t confront issues today, then you really need to make this show. It will show you that there is talent and passion in music today. You might just have to dig a little to find it. In the meantime you can stop by www.emberswift.com for a preview.
