The Ahn Trio Performs Friday, October 13
by Press Release

The Ahn Trio - a piano trio of sisters originally from South Korea critically praised for their fresh take on classical music - will bring their talent to Rockford in a recital at 7:30 pm, Friday, October 13, as part of Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center's 2006-2007 season. Tickets are available by calling 815.964.9713.

Often credited with making classical music "fun" and for introducing the genre to the "MTV Generation," violinist Angella and twins Lucia on piano and Maria on cello were educated at Juilliard in New York City. They are redefining the art and architecture of chamber music, breathing new life into the standard piano-trio literature. The trio's latest CD, Groovebox (EMI Classics), is a showcase of this vibrant and original music.

The sisters thrive on dissolving the barriers between art forms. They have fused their work with that of dancers, pop singers, DJs, painters, installation artists, photographers, lighting designers, ecologists and even kite makers. Most recently, they performed live at the Czech Grammy Awards ceremony with the Tata Bojs, and received critical acclaim for their collaborative project with the David Parsons Dance Company. Possessing an enviable combination of talent and style, they have been natural subjects for the fashion pages of the likes of Vogue and GQ. In 2003, they were named three of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People.

Reaching Out to Young Musicians

In addition to their recital, the Ahn sisters will conduct a lecture/demonstration with area schoolchildren at 10 am on October 13 in Maddox Theater on the Rockford College campus. This free event is sponsored by Rockford College, Keith School and the Community Foundation of Northern Illinois. (Call to check availability).

A Complete Evening

Those looking for an elegant, all-in-one evening out in the Rockford River District can take advantage of a partnership between Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center and Kuma's Asian Bistro in conjunction with the Ahn Trio's appearance. The two organizations have joined together to offer concert-goers a special prix fixe pre-concert dinner and a post-concert "Meet-the-Artists" reception at Kuma's.
