The Mayvilles packed Shooter's East for their first performance on the area music scene. They had the crowd hoppin' on the dance floor to a diverse selection of pop, rock, and "retro" hits not regularly covered by other local artists.
The group plays an eclectic mix of popular tunes from the 50's through today. Their selection of music crosses several genres that include modern pop/rock, classic pop hits, disco, funk, '80s new wave, '90s alternate rock and a bit of country. They had the house rocking and dancing to such hits as The Knack's My Sharona, Abba's Dancing Queen, Cheap Trick's Surrender and a smoking rendition of Patti Labelle's Lady Marmalade. The group also has a fine selection of "slow" songs for those people that want to cuddle up on the dance floor. Some of other the artists the Mayvilles cover include legendary acts such as Janis Joplin, Tammy Wynette and the Four Seasons all the way to current artists such as Avril Lavigne, A Simple Plan, and Jimmy Eat World. This gives the group an appeal that covers a wide variety of music.
The group takes each of the tunes they select and makes them their own. They accomplish this with an artistic style built around the excellent musicianship of each of the members. Betsy Muraski, lead vocals, has an amazing voice that gives her the ability of performing each song as well or even better than the original recording. The group is backed by the solid rhythm section combination of Randy Baker on drums and Jay Skoglund on bass. Rounding out the sound is Mark McGowan on keyboards/guitar and Eric Voss on guitar. Randy and Mark initially met Betsy while playing in another band. They liked her vocal style so much that they decided to start up a band of their own. So they started putting the group together in the fall of 2002. The final addition to the current lineup was brining in Jay on bass in February.
The group is still working on adding to their selection of music. Their goal is to offer a play list that will cater to all ages. They have gotten off to a great start as was evident in the reaction of the crowd at Shooter's East. So if you are looking to get up and dance to some great music, look no further than the Mayvilles. |
