Weekends Go Underground at Kuma's

Starting June 7th, there is a new place in town to enjoy a few cocktails with friends in a classy environment. That's because Thursday is the first night Underground at Kuma's will be open. The newest venture from Kuma's Asian Bistro, the facility is in the basement of the restaurant at 420 E. State Street.

While the term "basement" might conjure up images of musty old utilitarian rooms, Underground is anything but that. You can think of the place is an updating of the classy vintage jazz clubs of the 1930's. The interior certainly conveys that feeling. Brick walls and dark wood lend an air of class. Thursdays and Saturdays will feature performances by live bands. In keeping with that theme the music featured at the bar will be jazz and blues. Friday nights will emphasize local art. Featured food and drink recipes will complete the picture.

Underground will be open from 5 PM to midnight every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It presents a smoke free place for people over the age of 21 to go with their friends for a casual, yet classy, evening. Underground, just like the restaurant above, is the joint venture of husband and wife team Kuma J. Kim and Fred Sabet.

The duo opened the restaurant just over a year ago. That facility specializes in Asian (including Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Korean) cuisine. Like Underground the restaurant delivers that food in a upscale, contemporary atmosphere. Underground will feature food from its own kitchen. While much of that food will be the same choices offered in the upstairs restaurant, Sabet says that there will be dishes unique to Underground. He also says that they will offer sushi very soon.

While you can certainly make a trip down just for the Underground itself, or Kuma's Asian Bistro on its own, it would seem the perfect combination for a great night out. Stop in at the upstairs restaurant for a nice dinner, then make your way downstairs to soak up the atmosphere and a few drinks.

Even if you go on a Thursday or Saturday, don't think that the music will be overpowering. If you are more interested in sitting and chatting with your friends, Kim and Sabet have taken that into account, too. Underground is divided into two separate rooms. One has a group of tables a bit away from the music to make a great place for people to gather. Those more interested in the sounds on the stage can sit in the main venue and enjoy that, too.

Whatever your particular goals for your night out, you should really consider the combination of Kuma's Asian Grill and Underground at Kuma's when making your plans. It's a great way to get the best of two worlds without driving around town. Whatever your choice, rest assured that you'll enjoy an evening filled with elegance and fun - now that's a recipe for a memorable time.
