Carlyle Brewing Company, 215 E. State Street, officially opened May 8, 2003 as the Rockford region's only microbrewery. Local residents and Rockford visitors will now be able to experience the taste of quality, hand-crafted beer in the atmosphere of a true European-style ale house in the heart of Rockford's River District.

The unique setting is set to be one of the region's landmark destination sites and is expected to draw genuine beer lovers from Rockford and beyond.

Visitors to the 2,400-square-foot brewery can enjoy one of six to eight styles of both lagers and ales which will be on tap at all times and crafted by award-winning brewmaster and owner Don Carlyle. During the course of a year, Carlyle plans to brew approximately 30 different styles of beer, rotating throughout the seasons, and brewed on-site using all natural ingredients and no preservatives for the ultimate in freshness and taste. The beers currently featured are:
· Honey Ale
· Vanilla Cream Ale
· Cream Ale
· Stout
· British Pale Ale
· Scottish Ale

Carlyle is a Rockford-area native who was professionally trained at the Siebel Brewing Institute in Chicago. He is an accomplished, world-traveled brewmaster who has brought the flavors and European ambiance to Rockford based on his memories of old-world pubs and breweries he visited while traveling extensively through Europe learning the styles and tastes of quality brews.

"Carlyle Brewing Company is about a unique experience and the quality of taste people can't get anywhere else in the region. We know that more than 50 percent of visitors to breweries drive 50 miles or more to visit a brewery so we expect to be a destination site to draw additional tourists to the region," said Carlyle. "By placing ourselves in the heart of the city, we also hope to be a catalyst to drive both visitors and businesses alike to the River District."

In addition to ordering a pint at Carlyle Brewing Company's location, the locally created beer also will be distributed to 10-15 eating and drinking establishments throughout the region by Rockford-based Lorden Distributing.

Carlyle Brewing will not host a full-service restaurant, but patrons will be able to snack on oversized pretzels, bratwurst, sandwiches and cheese platters, among other seasonal favorites.
