Patty Larkin will be playing at the Mendelssohn PAC on the 27th of this month, so this seems like an excellent time to take a look at her latest Watch The Sky. The disc is a true “solo” work in that pretty much everything about the disc was done by Larkin herself, from the production to the performance of all the instruments to everything in between.

The CD is often times haunting, but it might not be the most consistent disc I’ve heard. Some of the tracks are extremely potent, while others feel just a little lackluster. Of course, much of that has more to do with the strength of the standouts than any weakness in the other pieces. The music seems to wander between techno, psychedelia, folk and other elements, but probably Americana would best sum it up.

I’d say this disc would be a good introduction to Larkin’s music – especially because there are a wide variety of musical styles presented here. For my money it tends a bit too much towards the mellower side of things and I would have preferred it to rock out a bit more, but really it’s quite a strong disc.
