The Crüe return with Saints of Los Angeles and prove that they are taking no prisoners. The first album in a decade to feature all four original members of the band, this is one of their all-time best. With their upcoming show at the Metro Centre of February 16th it seems a great time to have a look at the album here at Beet Café.

I first got into Mötley Crüe when I heard their Shout at the Devil album. I thought it was an exceptionally strong disc and featured a heavy metal sound that was similar to Kiss, but heavier. As more discs were released they moved into the form of glam rock based metal that was ruling the airwaves in the day. As they did I kind of lost interest as I was more committed to “real metal.” Listening to this disc it feels like the albums they should have been making during that period.

This is certainly heavier and more “metal” than the pop era fare, It has the little “mood music” bits of the type they used on Shout..., too. It seems to me like they’ve taken the best parts of both eras and blended them into a new sound that’s just plain awesome.

In some ways this seems like a concept album in that it feels like a series of tales documenting the history of the band from its beginnings in LA. It should be noted for those with kids (or just an aversion) to “foul language” that there are a lot of “f bombs” dropped during the course of this disc – so be careful out there.

I think that with this melding of Mötley Crüe sounds the disc should appeal to anyone who has ever enjoyed the band – no matter what era. For my money this is probably one of the three or four best albums they’ve ever released. They are on top of their game and firing on all thrusters with this release.
