How many of you were out there going to shows in the 1970's? Well, if your hand is raised you might remember Pentwater. These guys played the Rockford area quite a few times in their original incarnation - remember the old Great Illinois Purchase? After an exceptionally long hiatus this Chicago area progressive rock band has released their new CD Ab-Dul, and it is an awesome return to form.

The group's brand of prog rock always differed from that coming from "across the pond." They weren't afraid to let the music get dark at times or show that they had a sense of humor. These things weren't popular in the world of progressive rock in those days. Well, they have lost none of their musical virtuosity, quirkiness or sense of humor. All these factors contribute to the strength of this disc.

Those who have the vinyl of their original LP (this is actually their second real release - there was a compilation a few years back) - or the reissue on CD - will notice that the music feels very much in the same mode as that one. That's because the majority of this material is either old recordings finally mastered or new recordings of songs from the original incarnation of the group. This makes for music that seems as though no time has passed between the two releases - when in fact it's been about thirty years.

The long and short of it here - if you remember the band from the day, by all means hurry up and buy this. It's the same lineup and the music is very much in tune with the sounds that drew you to these guys. If you weren't fortunate enough to check them out way back when, but enjoy progressive rock by groups like Yes, Emerson Lake and Palmer and Gentle Giant, you'll love this album. If on the other hand you are simply a fan of adventurous music, Pentwater's quirky arrangements, unique vocal harmonies and clever songwriting will win you over, too. It's amazing that such a talented band comes from Northern Illinois. I'm used to all the great progressive rock emerging from England. If you are still on the fence stop by their website and click on the picture of the CD cover. You'll find some sound samples to clue you in before you make your purchase. And, there's also a link for you to buy the disc.
