Snaggs fans rejoice because they have just given all of you a hot tomato. For those unfamiliar with this band, it's time you catch on to one of the more promising local groups. The Snaggs are fronted by Cheap Trick vocalist Robin Zander's daughter, Holland, and the Trickster has nothing on his daughter, as her performance is evocative and impeccable. The remaining members of the group are Karl Ropp (bass), Micky Rosenquist (drums), Ed Dulian (vocals) and according to the liner notes Bill Olson (lead gut puncher). The group has released a disc that showcases catchy pop rock with a gritty edge and definite retro textures. While the 11 cuts on the CD are not all prizewinners, there are no dogs on display here either.

Among the standout numbers are the opening track, "Hipsters" which is one part power pop and one part alternative rock, "Alcoholic Glow" (a retro '70's sounding rocker), "Way To Be" (a straightforward rocker that includes a great arrangement, powerfully evocative lyrics and a killer instrumental break complete with backwards tracked instrumental work) and "Letting Go" (a major rocker that is the best cut on show here). Although, those are the standouts on the album, don't underestimate the rest of the album, as there are some other potent ones. Be sure to stick around after the end of the disc, as the hidden cut that is the real album closer is a cool folky, slightly country ballad that feels a lot like Janis Joplin. While it might not be the best choice for a final track, it is a very cool cut.

With this release The Snaggs show that they have a lot to offer the Rockford music scene. Parents should be warned, though, that two songs ("Billie Dolan" and "Destroy") have lyrics that will probably make them not a great choice for playing around the kids. Although this album isn't a total killer, it is definitely a strong starting point, and shows promise for great things to come from The Snaggs. You can find more info on the band (including where you can check them out live and locations to buy the disc) at their site www.thesnaggs.com.
