“Set in 1881, Ghosts concerns a young man with an incurable disease who, like many in our own age of AIDS, comes home to die in his mother’s house. She is a woman who has tolerated and covered up her husband’s philandering in order to advance her personal prestige. While Ghosts is often seen as a specific assault on nineteenth-century hypocrisy, Ibsen’s play actually transcends this topical limitation to address the timeless themes of Greek tragedy. In its brief ninety-minute playing time (with one intermission), Ghosts explores the archetypal struggles between men and women and the irreconcilable conflicts of parents and their children.”
Ghosts contains adult subject matter and is not recommended for those under the age of 18. |
