The Sound of Music, a musical based on “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” by Maria von Trapp, features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, and book by Howard Lindsay and Russell Crouse. The story takes place in the town of Salzburg in Austria just before World War II. Captain von Trapp (played by Doug Rappa) hires a governess, Maria (played by Amy TerHark), to care for his seven children. When the German Army attempts to draft Captain von Trapp, Maria takes steps to help him and his children escape to Switzerland.
The original play was performed on Broadway in 1959. The popular film starring Julie Andrews was released in 1965. Some of the memorable songs from this musical include: The Sound of Music, Edelweiss, My Favorite Things, Climb Every Mountain, and Do-Re-Mi.
The Sound of Music is a must-see show for this season. The storyline is intriguing and heartwarming, and you’ll be humming the songs for weeks after the show. Director Jim French and his talented cast have put together a truly wonderful production of this great American classic.
Performances are Fridays through Sundays, November 16th through December 2nd, with show times at 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays, and 2pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are now on sale, and are $10 for all seats (groups of 20 or more are $9 per seat). All shows will be performed at Pec Playhouse Theatre at 314 Main Street in Pecatonica, IL.
