Never a Bad Date, New American Theater Launches Its 35th Season
by Press Release

New American Theater kicks off its 35th season September 8th with a relationship comedy called Bad Dates, a one-woman show filled with quick-witted humor and amusing twists. Then as part of the city-wide Sherlock Holmes event, NAT presents Sherlock's Last Case. Two classics follow with Oliver! and Pride & Prejudice, and in a serious turn, the roots of hatred and binds of community will be explored in Laramie Project. The season will close with the zany and irreverent Western Civilization: The Complete Musical (abridged).

Bad Dates - September 5th to October 1st

Reentering the dating scene in your forties is a daunting challenge for any woman. Theresa Rebeck brings that struggle to life with shoes. Lots and lots of really great shoes. Take a journey with our heroine as she subjects herself to dates with all manner of strange, comical, and sometimes frightening men as she searches for middle-age love. And no self-respecting comedy about dating and rediscovery would be complete without a little teenage angst and the Romanian mafia.

Sherlock's Last Case - October 17th to November 12th

What if Watson just got fed up? What if he couldn't take hearing "it's elementary" one more time? This twisted and suspenseful who-dunnit explores that friendship-ending and potentially deadly possibility. Sir Doyle's characters offer plenty of laughs and surprises in what has been called the funniest Holmes mystery ever set to stage. Join NAT as we partner with the Discovery Center to bring the amazing deductive reasoning of Sherlock Holmes to life.

Oliver! - November 28th to December 31st

For the holidays, enjoy this familiar family classic filled with memorable songs like "Consider Yourself," and "As Long as He Needs Me." Follow the young, impressionable, orphan Oliver as he navigates the harsh surroundings and personalities he continues to encounter. Every student reads Dickens at one point or another, so be sure they see it up close and live to spark their interest anew.

Pride and Prejudice - January 26th to February 11th

The Bennet's have a problem - finding suitable men to marry their five impetuous daughters. This elegantly staged version of the much-loved novel exudes excitement and romance as Elizabeth Bennet matches wits and hearts with the aloof and wealthy Mr. Darcy. A play filled with passion and pageantry, amusing characters and the intoxication of young love.

The Laramie Project - February 27th to March 25th

On October 7, 1998 a young university student named Matthew Shepard was found tied to a fencepost outside the town of Laramie, Wyoming after being severely beaten and left for dead. The national media frenzy that followed made his death a national symbol of intolerance, but for the people of Laramie the event was deeply personal. Their real-life perspectives are shared as we explore the depths to which humanity can sink and the heights of compassion of which we are capable.

Western Civilization! The Complete Musical (abridged) - April 17th to May 13th

1000 years in 100 minutes! This raucous musical history lampoons the characters, discoveries and events of the last millennium. From Vikings to astronauts and from Beowulf to Baywatch, history will never be the same. Prepare for an irreverent and hilarious rendition of each major epoch, with reasonable accuracy and a musical score that provides the perfect punctuation.
