Historic Auto Attractions Acquires New Artifacts for Kennedy and White House Exhibits
by Lisa Palmeno
lpalmeno@sbcglobal.net

Described in their literature as the place "Where History Meets Entertainment," Historic Auto Attractions in Roscoe, IL, is owned by world-famous race car driver Wayne Lensing. Lensing has packed the showroom with several fascinating exhibits, all based on the vehicles driven by famous people and movie characters.

A man who is obviously interested in history as well as cars, the owner recently added new artifacts to the museum's Kennedy family and White House exhibits. The new acquisitions include artifacts from several rooms of the White House, including furniture from The Red, Green, Blue and Music Rooms. Various pieces of period furnishings are now on display, such as the clocks from the eras of Presidents Truman; FDR; Hoover; Andrew Jackson; Eisenhower; Taft; and Coolidge.

In addition to furniture, new wall cabinets house personal items, such as clothing and shoes, from First Ladies Lady Bird Johnson, Jacqueline Kennedy, and Rosalind Carter. Lyndon Baines Johnson's eyeglasses and Lady Bird's mandolin-shaped saccharine holder are placed near an original piece of the Berlin Wall.

Museum Manager Eric Hoffman describes the Kennedy exhibit as "the most emotional exhibit" in the building. No wonder. A presentation of the Kennedy assassination in Dallas is complete with the ambulance that transported Lee Harvey Oswald's body to the hospital and shockingly-graphic photos of Kennedy's car after the shooting.

The story is now extended into a new room that houses the flag that graced the President's casket on the day of his funeral. Jackie's funeral hat is in a nearby glass case, and information about the tragic event decorates the walls.

A wall diagram of our nation's capitol building called "A Cutaway View of the White House" is provided to educate the viewer about the White House's layout and types of rooms.
