"With a Capital 'B' and That Rhymes With 'P' and That Stands For 'Pool'"

"State and Madison." For those that have spent their lives here in River City, just hearing that simple phrase brings back numerous fond memories. The soda shop, the night club, the bowling alley, the former Irish Rose location, and of course the billiard room bring on a smile as part of those recollections. "State and Madison." The memories of meeting friends after work or on a weekend night to kick back and relax with a pool cue in hand. Ah, those were the days.

Originally opened in 1926, State and Madison has staked a claim in the history of the City of Rockford. The walls are adorned with framed articles that chronicle the business’ seventy-seven year history. Many of the most famous pool players have come here to chalk up a cue and compete against each other in a variety of tournaments over the years.

After being closed for some time, State and Madison is back and open for business. Now you can again experience the thrill of sinking that impossible shot. Was it skill? Was it pure luck? Or was it a little of both?

The downstairs billiard room has been completely remodeled. Eighteen new pool tables are spread across the room. Ten tables can be rented for $8.00 an hour and the remaining eight “bar” tables are $1.00 per game. Three darts boards line the wall and a new bar serves up your favorite beverage.

The upstairs bar is in the final stages of remodeling and will be open within the next few weeks. The bar will feature imports and microbrews in addition to serving food. An English tap system is being installed to serve up the featured beers. Live music from jazz/blues/funk groups will be booked into the bar.

For those that like a little friendly competition when they play, you might want to come on down and start up a league. State and Madison is also available for booking private parties, or it's a great place for hosting a charity fund-raising event.

State and Madison is one of the host venues for this years Groove Walk on Saturday May 10th. Stop in and groove to the sounds of Too Deep.

So come on down. Grab a cue and put the eight ball in the corner pocket. Or just stop in for a relaxing drink after a hard day at work because State and Madison is again the place to be.
