The Passion of John Lamar - Studio 451

Studio 451° is the workshop of artist John Lamar. It is so much more, though. Speaking with Lamar one quickly learns that he is a very thoughtful and passionate man. This fire burns throughout his work. You can certainly take his compositions at face value, without knowing the thought and philosophies behind them. Doing that, however, would be missing a big part of the picture. Do yourself a favor and take the time to talk to the artist, and you will appreciate his art even more.

The studio itself is one part utilitarian workspace (filled with tools, books and works in progress) and one part gallery (with many of Lamar's works displayed on the walls). Lamar creates both traditional paintings and copper sculptures. Samples of each can be seen adorning the walls as you enter. It should be noted that just getting to the studio is part of the adventure. Once you enter the old industrial building, signs lead you down several spooky corridors and up a flight of stairs to the studio. Although the entrance comes across as a bit daunting and uninviting, you will feel welcome as you enter the establishment itself.

As to the work displayed, words seldom can convey the power and majesty of art (neither can photographs), so I will simply tell you that if you like what the pictures show, you really must get out to see the real thing. Lamar's in-studio hours vary, so give him a call at 519-1809 to set up an appointment. For those looking for something more specific in a piece, he also does commissioned work, so run your idea past him.

The studio is located at 2500 N. Main Street. That's inside the large brick factory building, just across from CalCars. If you park behind the auto dealer, you can't miss the sign on the wall telling you which door to use. Be sure to make the time to check out the copper and canvas works on display. And by all means, get the chance to talk to the artist. You won't be disappointed.
