Pints for Prostates at the Olympic

by Press Release

The Olympic Tavern in Rockford, Ill., is marking Oktoberfest for a Cure and Prostate Cancer Awareness Month by promoting prostate cancer awareness and raising funds for the national "Pints for Prostates" campaign from Sep 9-16.  During the week long celebration, patrons can buy any Bell’s beer and The Olympic Tavern will donate $.25 to Pints for Prostates. The Olympic Tavern is located at 2327 N Main St. in Rockford.

Pints for Prostates is a grassroots campaign that uses the universal language of beer to reach men with an important health message. Founded by prostate cancer survivor Rick Lyke in 2008, the campaign raises awareness among men about the need for regular health screenings and PSA testing by making appearances at beer festivals, social networking and pro bono advertising.

Each week in the U.S. more than 4,600 men hear the words, “You have prostate cancer.” These are our fathers, brothers, husbands, sons, friends, colleagues and neighbors. Thanks to early detection and improved treatments, the prostate cancer survival rate has improved significantly in recent years. Still, the Nation Cancer Institute says 33,700 American men will die from the disease in 2011.  We want men to get tested, live longer, and drink more beer.  One in six American men will face prostate cancer. Most people do not realize that prostate cancer is 33 percent more common in men than breast cancer is in women. The September observance of National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month brings needed focus to the importance of early detection in beating prostate cancer.

Pints for Prostates has registered as a 501(c)3 charity and 100% of all funds raised by the group go to fighting prostate cancer and assisting men with the disease. Us TOO International Prostate Cancer Education and Support Network, a 501(c)3 charity that works to support, educate and advocate for men with prostate cancer and their families, is a recipient of Pints for Prostates financial support.
