Two worlds, one artist
Canadian artist Ember Swift is an internationally touring musician and songwriter, and founder of the independent label Few’ll Ignite Sound. Originally from Toronto, she has spent the past few years calling her home base Beijing, China. In other words, this is where she has been landing in between touring extensively throughout Canada, the US, Australia, New Caledonia (French island in the Pacific) and now, also China. She has released 10 albums and 1 DVD project since 1996 and continues to have a loyal fan base across many national borders.
Having taken the time to learn Mandarin Chinese, immerse in the culture (which included falling in love and getting married to a local Beijing musician—these things take time!), as well as to develop a new body of work that settles more naturally into the cultural surroundings of her new adopted home (LENTIC, released 2009), Ember Swift will be bringing her music to stages in the Midwestern United States with a series of duo performances this October and November, 2010. Ember is known for her unique, jazz-influenced guitar playing and elastic vocals. She will be joined by her longtime collaborator and friend, Cheryl Reid, on percussion and backing vocals.
The new “Lentic” material is a merging of the Mandarin language, the 5-note Asian musical scale, and fresh new content, giving voice to experiences of cultural diversity, life in a foreign country, and the unfettered believe in love. Merge this with the accustomed Ember Swift themes, not least of which the consistent pursuit of truth and integrity in all aspects of life, and we have ourselves a fresh new direction for this veteran songwriter that will not fail to transport her listeners with every song. Styles include jazz, swing, R&B, funk, pop, folk-rock, blues, and French cabaret. Ember sings in English, French, and Mandarin. This performance will be a combination of some of Ember Swift’s new Lentic material alongside of her previously released older material. Don’t worry! Longtime fans will still get to hear some of their favourites!
