RSO Presents Gershwin’s An American in Paris and the Choral Blockbuster Carmina Burana

by Administrator

The Rockford Symphony Orchestra is thrilled to present two epic orchestral works on Saturday, November 13, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at the Coronado Performing Arts Center. Maestro Larsen will conduct George Gershwin’s spectacular An American in Paris. For the second half of the concert, he will turn the podium over to special Italian guest conductor Giovanni Ferrauto for the magnificent orchestral and choral work Carmina Burana.
Sr. Ferrauto is an internationally recognized choral and orchestral conductor who is coming from his native Sicily to the United States to conduct this piece for the RSO. This concert is part of the ComEd Classics Series, and is graciously sponsored by OSF St. Anthony Medical Center.

RSO Music Director Steven Larsen became acquainted with Maestro Ferrauto while traveling in Italy in 2007. Speaking recently about his choice to bring Ferrauto to Rockford, Steven Larsen said, “Giovanni’s warmth and humanity are apparent in both his personal relationships and his music making. I observed in the people I met and worked with who regularly play and sing under his baton it was clear that everyone, from the lowliest corista to the concertmaster to
music critics to civic leaders, had great respect and affection for him.”

The RSO last performed Carl Orff’s masterpiece at the closing of the Midway Theater in April 2000. In addition to the 77 instrumental musicians on stage, Carmina Burana includes more than 100 members of the Mendelssohn Chorale, directed by Martha Bein, and a 25-member chorus from the Rock Valley Children’s Chorus directed by Leah Baskin. Carmina Burana is one of the most popular choral works of all time, appearing in innumerable movie soundtracks and TV commercials.

On Friday, November 12, the RSO presents SoundBites, the RSO lunchtime series held from 12-1 p.m. at the Riverfront Museum Park’s Kresge Hall. SoundBites is an opportunity for the community to hear and interact with Steven Larsen and Giovanni Ferrauto. Reservations are strongly recommended.

SoundBites guests may bring their own lunch or pre-order boxed lunches through the RSO office with a pre-payment of $12 by calling 815-965-0049. Lunch orders must be received by Wednesday, November 10.

All RSO Classics Series concerts include a pre-concert lecture by Steven Larsen at 6:30 p.m. Pre-concert lectures are a great way to gain insight from the music director’s perspective on the pieces performed by the orchestra.

Tickets for this concert are available at www.rockfordsymphony.com, by calling 815-965-0049, or visiting the Coronado Performing Arts Center Box Office at 314 N. Main Street. Ticket prices range from $18 to $56. Student tickets are only $6 for students up to 22 with an ID.

Under the artistic leadership of Music Director Steven Larsen, the Rockford Symphony Orchestra is a leading arts organization in the Rockford Region and the third largest symphony orchestra in the state of Illinois. The RSO is made up of 85 professional musicians who perform 17 concerts per year--including classics, pops, ballet, and opera--for an estimated annual audience of 30,000.
