The Underpants opens Artists' Ensemble's season
by Press Release
In 1910 Düsseldorf, Louise has trouble explaining to her husband exactly how her underpants fell to her ankles in public. Her little lingerie mishap causes a public scandal to the horror of her fussbudget husband. Soon, would-be boarders (all male) are begging to rent their spare room. Artists’ Ensemble Theater opens their season with The Underpants by Steve Martin, adapted from a 1910 farce by Carl Sternheim. Performances are September 10–26 in the Cheek Theatre at Rockford College.
Steve Martin is famous for films such as Father of the Bride and Parenthood, but he is also the award-winning writer of nine screenplays (including Roxanne and Bowfinger), three bestselling books (including Pure Drivel), and an earlier play, Picasso at the Lapin Agile.
Erin Spears plays Louise with Stephen F. Vrtol III as her fussy husband and Margaret Raether as her busybody neighbor. Chicago guest actor Will Clinger plays an unpublished poet determined to seduce Louise. David A. Gingerich plays a lovelorn barber obsessed with Louise and her errant underpants. Another would-be boarder is played by John Chase and Michael Palmenderi plays the King.
Performances are Thursdays at 7:30, Fridays at 8, Saturdays at 4 and 8, and Sundays at 2 and 7. Thursday tickets are $19. All other shows are $28, $26 for seniors, and $10 for students. Tickets may be purchased online at www.artistsensemble.org or by calling 815-904-2277.
