Edgebrook Celebrates National Farmers Market Week - "Where Fresh Is"

by Press Release

Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack has proclaimed August 1 – 7, 2010 as National Farmers Market Week. To highlight the growing importance that farmers markets have for consumers, farmers and the economy in Illinois, Governor Pat Quinn has issued a Proclamation identifying August 1 – 7, 2010 as National Farmers Market Week “Illinois - Where Fresh Is”.

This year marks the 11th annual National Farmers Market Week. Since the USDA began declaring National Farmers Market Week in 2000, the number of farmers markets has grown more than 60%, from 2,863 markets in 2000 to 5,200 in 2009.

Edgebrook is one of the nearly 300 Farmers Markets in Illinois. Edgebrook is the longest running market in Rockford and currently has over 30 proud vendors selling a wide variety of products.

Join us at Edgebrook on August 4th from 9 am – 1 pm to celebrate National Farmers Market week. We will have FREE giveaway items from the Rockford Park District and the Illinois Department of Agriculture, also including an Edgebrook gift certificate giveaway! Please visit our website at edgebrookshops.com to see the dates we offer free cooking demonstrations and recipe books provided by Learn Great Foods in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Agriculture – “Where Fresh Is” initiative.

Farmers Markets are good for everyone! They are good for your health, good for your community and good for the economy. Not to mention, they offer the freshest foods from Illinois’ most entrepreneurial farmers and preserve our state’s agricultural traditions.
