Scottish fiddle legend Fraser and brilliant young American cellist Haas join together in tunes from the golden era of Robert Burns to Fraser’s own compositions.  This engaging duo’s near-telepathic interplay is dazzling, driving and just plain fun!

Mendelssohn Performing Artists –
Schumann, the ardent romantic
Friday, October 29, 2010, 7:30 p.m.

This performance honors the 200th birth year of Robert Schumann, a composer who epitomized the 19th century romantic.  Some of Schumann’s most beautiful songs and instrumental works for piano, clarinet and voice, inspired by his beloved Clara, will be performed by our own Mendelssohn Performing Artists.

This concert will feature piano by Marilyn Cade, Patricia Jeske, Anne Marie Olson and Rulee Stallmann; clarinet by Darleen Carl-Beck; and vocal by Scott Chachula, Cathy Herdeman, Elizabeth LaGrande, and John Wahlquist.

Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra – An English Christmas

Chicago a cappella presents “Roll, Jordan, Roll: The Spiritual, Old and New”
Friday, February 25, 2011, 7:30 p.m.

This performance by Chicago a cappella, one of the area’s most accomplished and innovative vocal ensembles, will celebrate the grand power and sheer beauty of the African American spiritual.  We’ll also welcome a top youth choir from the community as guest ensemble, passing along this uplifting choral tradition to the next generation of singers.

Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra – A Handel Celebration

The Mendelssohn Chorale and organist Bill Stein will join the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra to present a selection of George Frederic Handel’s most beloved and well-known works.

The concert will include “Overture to the Queen of Sheba”, the coronation anthems “King Shall Rejoice” and “My Heart Is Inditing”, “Water Music, Suite in G major”, and the Organ Concerto in G minor, Op. 4, No. 1.

In partnership with Court Street United Methodist Church, Bill Stein will present an organ recital on Thursday, March 17, 2011 to honor the 40th anniversary of the organ’s installation.  Mendelssohn season subscribers will receive a ticket to this recital with our compliments.

Angela Cheng, Alvin and Alan Chow, piano
Friday, May 6, 2011, 7:30 p.m.

World-renowned concert pianist Angela Cheng joins husband Alvin and his twin brother Alan in a dazzling display of pianistic exuberance and energy.  In addition to beloved duo piano repertoire, the three will alternate and play works for one, two, three, four and six hands…all at one piano!

The concert will include Mozart’s Piano Sonata in C major, K. 545, arr. Grieg; Grainger’s “Fantasia on Gershwin’s ‘Porgy and Bess’”, and Ravel’s “La Valse”.

About Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center

For 126 years, Mendelssohn has been a source of musical leadership for residents of northern Illinois.  It also serves as a haven for musicians and future musicians through a wide range of programming and support.

* Fine Performances: Each season, Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center sponsors live performances by local and world-renowned artists through our annual concert series and Music On Main concert series, giving northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin residents access to world-class music close to home.

* Youth Programs: The organization also fosters the next generation of musicians through a vibrant and growing Youth Music Program that includes the Chandler Starr Miller Scholarship Competition; the High School Starr of Excellence Awards; and a Young Musicians Series of recitals, concerts, workshops and master-classes.  The Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center is also home to the Rock Valley Children’s Choirs and the business office of Kantorei, the Singing Boys of Rockford.  Mendelssohn’s youth programs are available to all, regardless of age, race, musical ability or economic status.

* In Residence: The Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center offers music performance and education opportunites to the community through the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra, Mendelssohn Chorale, Piano Club, Art Song Project, and adult workshops and master-classes.  Our performers and music teachers extend the reach of Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center to many diverse audiences across the northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin region.

* Performance and Event Venues: The organization has two separate venues, the Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center and the Emerson House, that offer a beautiful and historic setting for concerts, recitals, receptions, seminars, meetings, and parties.  These elegant venues are available for the community’s use and enhance Mendelssohn’s presence on Rockford’s cultural corridor.
