Charlotte's Web for the Performing Arts Presents: Port Righ

by Press Release

WHO: Port Righ www.portrigh.com

WHAT: Concert event presented by Charlotte’s Web for the Performing Arts and Spring Creek United Church of Christ

WHEN: 7:30 p.m. Saturday May 8, 2010

WHERE: Spring Creek United Church of Christ, 4500 Spring Creek Rd., Rockford, IL

WHY: Featuring Celtic harp, bagpipes, and English concertina, Jo and Wayne Morrison are the distinctive duo Port Righ. Incorporating vocals into their passionate renditions of traditional Celtic music, the duo specializes in Scottish music and has spent a great deal of time in Scotland absorbing the sights, sounds, and nuances of the culture, lending authenticity to their unique sound. While ranging from lively marches and dance tunes to wistful airs from Scotland, Port Righ broadens their repertoire with traditional Irish music, vocal pieces, and their own original works. Their musical partnership is marked by a warm, balanced sound and faithfulness to Celtic tradition. In every performance audiences can clearly see their respect for each other and their passion for the music they create.
Port Righ is the Gaelic name for the town of Portree on Scotland's Isle of Skye. It is usually translated as "king's port" but may also be translated as "king's music" or "king's song." Since the Celtic harp and the bagpipes were both historically used to entertain kings, the name seems fitting for this unusual group.

Jo Morrison is nationally known for her evocative interpretation of Scottish and Irish music on the harp. Chuck Lipsig from Green Man Review's Best of 2000 listings states "Jo gets more out of the harp than should be possible." In addition to playing the Highland bagpipe, Wayne Morrison also performs on the shuttle pipes, the Highland pipes' quieter cousin. He brings the sound of the mellow English concertina to the duo's instrumentation as well. Their commitment to a traditional style gives them a sound comfortable both in today's modern society and also fitting for Renaissance festivals, historic sites, and other recreationist events. Port Righ released their first recording in 2007: "Na Bi Gòrach -- Don't be Foolish”. When not performing, Wayne and Jo share their knowledge and love of the music with others as instructors at Common Ground on the Hill, a traditional music and arts center in Westminster, MD. They believe strongly in the Common Ground conviction that we can come to a greater understanding of other cultures through the sharing of music and arts. What a spectacular concert for celebrating Mother’s Day!
