ArtsPlace Extends Application Deadline

by Press Release

The Rockford Area Arts Council is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Grant, which will allow the program to remain free of charge for the participants. ArtsPlace is for young, aspiring artists between 14-18 years old. The youth work under the direction of professional artists to create art to sell and perform for the public. Proceeds earned from ticket and art sales are divided equally among the youth who successfully complete the program.

ArtsPlace welcomes Ms. Dorothy Paige-Turner, well know Jazz vocalist, to join the ArtsPlace staff. Ms. Turner will be the lead artist for a team which sing, create poetry, song lyrics and present storytelling.  ArtsPlace staff includes Bruce McDonald, co-director and printmaking artist, Kathryn Martin, sculpture and paint artist, and Tamara Newquist, dance artist. Sharon Nesbit-Davis is the Director of the program. ArtsPlace meets at Rockford College’s Clark Arts Center. The ArtsPlace program will be held June 21 to August 3. It meets Monday-Thursdays from Noon to 4:00 PM.

In addition to the National Endowment for the Arts, ArtsPlace is supported through grants from the Rockford Park District, Illinois Department of Human Services, Target and individual donations. The grant from the National Endowment for the Arts allows the program to remain free for the participants.

The Arts Council has extended the initial application deadline to May 14th . Seats will be filled first from those applicants. An “Open Call” date will be held in June if openings remain.

Applications are available at the Rockford Council, 713 East State or through the Arts Council web site: www.artsforeveryone.com. Youth from Winnebago and Boone Counties are eligible to apply.

The mission of the Arts Council is to support, promote and develop the arts for everyone. We know the power of the arts to change lives. ArtsPlace was created to give youth from diverse ethnic and economic backgrounds that opportunity.  Donations to ArtsPlace by individuals and area business are needed and appreciated.
