Beethoven's 9th Symphony is a Joyous Grand Finale of the RSO's 75th Anniversary Season

by Press Release

The RSO’s 75th Anniversary Season comes to a close as Music Director Steven Larsen and the Rockford Symphony Orchestra present a grand finale performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 8, 2010, at the Coronado Performing Arts Center. The Mendelssohn Chorale’s and four renowned guest vocalists join the RSO to present Beethoven’s final symphony. The performance is graciously sponsored by Hamilton Sundstrand.

Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, best known for its compelling “Ode to Joy” chorus, was completed by Beethoven when the composer was completely deaf. Guest vocalists for this performance, who have appeared with numerous opera companies including the Metropolitan Opera and the Lyric Opera of Chicago, are mezzo-soprano Jennifer Lane, tenor Scott Ramsay, soprano Christine Steyer, and baritone Gerard Sundberg. Sundberg appeared with RSO earlier this season as a featured vocalist on the “God Save the King” Classics concert in March.

Immediately following the performance, the RSO will host a celebratory dinner at the Rockford Country Club. Tickets for the dinner are $100 and the reservation deadline is Friday, April 30.

Tickets for this concert and dinner are available at www.rockfordsymphony.com and by calling 815-965-0049. Concert tickets may also be purchased by visiting the Coronado Performing Arts Center Box Office at 314 N. Main Street. Concert ticket prices range from $30 to $55.

Under the artistic leadership of Music Director Steven Larsen, the Rockford Symphony Orchestra is a leading arts organization in the Rockford Region and the third largest symphony orchestra in the state of Illinois.  The RSO is made up of 85 professional musicians who perform 17 concerts per year--including classics, pops, ballet, and opera--for an estimated annual audience of 30,000.  The RSO was named the 2007 Orchestra of the Year for Illinois and is celebrating its 75th anniversary during the 2009/10 season.
