Auditions for the "Stephen Mack and Hononegah story" Saturday, March 6th

by Press Release

Auditions for the “Stephen Mack and Hononegah story” will be held Saturday, March 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Macktown Living History Center. Speaking roles as well as technical support positions are available and organizers report there is room for all who wish to participate. The Macktown Living History Center is located inside the Macktown Forest Preserve in Rockton, Illinois.

The May 22nd, 2010 performance will contain three acts telling the story of Stephen Mack, the first permanent settler in Winnebago County. Born in Vermont, Mack moves to Michigan where his father starts a mercantile business. Stephen later sets out for Illinois to engage in the fur trade. While in Grand Detour, he meets a Native American woman named Hononegah who becomes his wife. They move north and establish a settlement named Pecatonic at the confluence of the Rock and Pecatonica Rivers. This becomes Macktown, the first settlement in Winnebago County.

The audience will be invited to bring their lawn chairs and/or blankets to enjoy the play as it progresses from one act to the next at sites around the settlement. Written by Deston Lee, the author says the research to write the production was a labor of love. While stationed in England, director Bill Lee arranged for productions to be performed for charity. Just two of his musical shows, Frank Loesser’s “Guys and Dolls” and an original musical penned by him, “Listen to the Music”, earned over 1700 pounds for charity.
