Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra with Margaret Batjer, violin

The Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center is pleased to present the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra with Stephen Squires, music director and Margaret Batjer, violin on Friday, March 12, 2010 at 7:30 p.m. at Court Street United Methodist Church.  Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for students.  Groups of 10 or more receive $5 off per ticket.

This concert will feature a performance of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, one of the most popular and most performed violin concertos of all time.

Margaret Batjer, violinist and current concertmaster of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, is the daughter of Eleanor Stanlis, who founded the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra.

Measure 5, the advanced touring and performing ensemble of the Rockford College Music Academy, is comprised of 20 string and piano students ages 13 to 18, and is directed by Rachel Handlin, who is also concertmaster of the Mendelssohn Chamber Orchestra.  The Music Academy of Rockford College was founded by Eleanor Stanlis.

Shelby Latin Harris, violinist, was a student at the Rockford College Music Academy for 17 years, where she studied with Eleanor Stanlis before earning performance degrees from Indiana University Conservatory of Music.

The winner of the 2009-2010 Mendelssohn Performing Arts Center Adult Starr of Excellence Award will also be announced during the concert.
