Park District Announces Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition Results

The team of Polly Freund, K. Dyer and Krista Gustafson won the 24th Annual Illinois Snow Sculpting Competition with their sculpture of "Happy Together," Polly Freund and K. Dyer live in Rockford, IL and Krista Gustafson resides in Belvidere, IL.

The winning team was honored at the competition's awards ceremony on Saturday, January 23 at Sinnissippi Park in Rockford, Illinois.  16 state teams, 13 high school teams and one exhibition team (last year's winning team) participated in the January 20-23, 2010 event.

Other awards included:
•    Second Place - Mayor's Award: Vagen til Valhalla, Sculpted by Svenhard, Bjorn & Thorfinn Skupien
•    Third Place - Rockford Park District Award “Fish out of Water,” Sculpted by Kelly Madison, Sandy Yu & Sarah Kluge
•    People's Choice Award - “Happy Together,” Sculpted by Polly Freund, K. Dyer, & Krista Gustafson
•    Committee's Choice/ Patricia "Pat" Hayes Parks Award - “Mr. Toad’s Not So Wild Ride” Sculpted by Scott Triplett, Keith Pliml & Dan Berry

The three-member state teams work 3½ days on a five-ton 6' x 6' x 10’ block of snow to create frozen works of art; the four-member high school teams work 2 ½ days on a 4' x 4' x 6' block of snow. Sculptors can not use power tools or props (other than the snow) to hold up the pieces, nor may colorants be added.

The Illinois Snow Sculpting competition is hosted by the Rockford Park District.  Major sponsors of this year's event include Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD), Holiday Inn Express, Rasmussen College, Stockholm Inn, SwedishAmerican Health System, Texas Roadhouse, WIFR-TV Channel 23 and William Charles Construction.
