Sculptures Enhance Rock River Corridor

by Press Release

The Rockford Park District announced that four sculptures will be placed in the vicinity of the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens area. Three of these sculptures were donated, and one will be relocated to join the seven existing sculptures currently located along the Rock River from the YMCA to past the Auburn Street Bridge. The eleven sculptures will create a unique sculpture corridor of public art along the Rock River’s Sinnissippi corridor.

“We are pleased by the generosity of our donors and our ability to work together in collaboration with our local arts community on this project that enhances one of our city’s most valuable assets – our riverfront,” said Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens Manager Ruth Miller.

Below is a list of the three donated and one relocated sculpture:

Dancers by O. V. (Verne) Shaffer
Donated by: CherryVale Mall/and CBL Properties
This sculpture spent many years at CherryVale Mall near the entrance to Marshall Fields. Recently valued in excess of $100,000, this beautiful sculpture will be placed in the west plaza area near the Conservatory with a base that will raise the Dancers ten feet into the air.

Anemotive Kinetic by Robert Mangold
Donated by: Tom & Darlene Furst
Tom and Darlene Furst have generously agreed to donate Anemotive Kinetic from their personal collection. Created by New Mexican artist Robert Mangold, this sculpture was recently valued at $150,000. Anemotive Kinetic with its reflective qualities will greet Conservatory guests with a burst of light.

Coneflowers by Joe Mongan
Donated by: Joe Mongan, owner of Porch
Local artist and business owner Joe Mongan offered to create and donate a sculpture in honor of the Nicholas Conservatory & Gardens project. He will create a metal cluster of coneflowers, the City of Gardens “official” flower. The piece will be placed within the variety of prairie plants located near the plaza.

Sight Seeing by J. Seward Johnson Jr.
Donated by Art in the Park Committee, November 1991
This sculpture was originally placed behind the Rockford Public Library on the Library Esplanade. The sculpture was damaged and has since been removed. Sight Seeing will find a new home at the Nicholas Conservatory near the east side planting area.
