Young Choreographers' Concert -

by Press Release

Rockford Dance Company is proud to present the 9th Annual Young Choreographers’ Concert featuring the choreography of the members of the Rockford Dance Company.   This exhilarating concert is full fresh ideas and moods.  This year the group of choreographers’ picked a subtitle of “E-Motion” to not only signify their world of communication through e-mails, but to search for “The action of emotion”.

This year’s choreographers include most of our 2009-2010 company members;   Bailey Glavan, Martha Shaw, and Colleen Oster from Hononegah High School,  Marina Ragonese-Barnes and Monette Tanuyan from Auburn High School, Anastasia Benson from Guilford High School, Rachael Dolan from Winnebago High School, Rachel Seger from Boylan High School, and Hillary Mellinger from Beloit College.  Alumna, Camille Simon, now attending University of Illinois-Champaign, has also created a group piece.

The concert will include eleven group dances and solos created for each other.  Margaret Faust, the Artistic Director of Rockford Dance Company and artistic consultant to the choreographers, believes that it is important for each choreographer to work with a group of dancers and with a single dancer.  The difference is immense and each choreographer will find their strength in this exercise.

Rockford Dance Company’s Production Manager, Laurie Oliver has been working with the choreographers on light, set and costume design.   They have learned how these elements can be used to support their vision and their dancers.

Some dances are still being created and some might be done but the choreographer is still searching for the title.  Titles that are decided on include:  “A Case of Confusion” by Monette Tanuyan, “Loud Emotions” by Rachel Seger, and “Clearing Frustration” by Bailey Glavan.  Bailey offers up a quote by Andrea Buchanan to support her title; “Forget perfect on the first try.  In the face of frustration, your best tool is a few deep breaths, and remembering that you can do anything once you’ve practiced two hundred times…”

An answer question period with the choreographers will follow after the performance.  This concert promises to challenge us through the spirit of motion.
