Are You Romantically Inclined? - The Romantics Are Coming To Rockford

September 2nd will see the return of The Romantics to Rockford. They'll be playing the Oasis stage at On The Waterfront, which will put them only a short jaunt from where I first saw them at the Rockford Metro Centre. On a mismatched bill with Donnie Iris and UFO, the band put in a strong showing that time, just as I'm sure they will this time around.

It seems pretty likely that you know one or more of their hits. Those songs include "What I Like About You," "Talking In Your Sleep" and "One In A Million." The truth is, though, if you like any of those songs, you'll enjoy pretty much the entire performance of the band. These guys really pull their musical weight with their straight-ahead, almost punky, pop rock texture. While they are no slouches in the album sound department, from what I've seen their music really comes alive in concert performance. That's where it takes on a whole new life with added power and vitality. These guys really do rock in live performance.

The group formed in Detroit in 1977 and their blend of old school hard rock with modern (at the time) punk and new wave elements served to earn their debut release (the self-titled 1979 disc saw the release of "What I Like About You," and earned them fans and fame. Over the course of the next decade they would be destined to release a series of albums and rack up more hits. While things have slowed since then (and there have been a few lineup changes) the core of the band has remained and they are vital to this day. It seems a given that these guys will rock the Waterfront stage. My message to you in that regard is two words in length "be there."

You are correct!! They absolutely SNAP, CRACKLE and POP in their live shows. I've seen them play many times, recently in June in Manitowoc, WI and 2 summers ago at OscarFest, and they sound better now than ever! Do not miss it!

Thanks for using my video frame grab from the 2004 Oscar Fest show. It would have been nice to mention that the image came from Oscarfest and the 2004 Rockford show. I'll be at the show. Bad move by OTW to place Cheap Trick, Lee Rocker and The Romantics all at the same time and date. Nice way to deplete your audience for the performers that have a similar crowd.

It would have made more sense to have Rocker, Romantics, and CT on an Unreal triple bill. Glad to see The Romantics agian, sorry to miss the other two performers. That's Rockford!

Should be a great show. Rob, sorry just used the pics that the Romantic's press people sent. Those are in their standard press kit, so I'm surprised you don't see them around more. Which one is yours? The top one is one they send as a post card. The second one is an individual pic they sent as a glossy. Number three comes from the header of their biography and the bottom one is another glossy that they included.

And Ron, sorry for calling you Rob just now. Gotta look more carefully BEFORE posting.

If the second was a glossy then it was from Tom Holoubek photography. He shot the show for fun, sent some beautiful (and I'm not being biased) shots of the band and never heard back. All he asked for was for some to be posted on the www page. They took streaming files from me and used them for their www, I have asked permission to have the whole show streamed on Youtube. Still waiting. I'll let the photog know they are using his shots. He will be pleased. Sort of like a belated birthday gift. Thanks for the information and THIS IS THE SHOW TO SEE. Well, that is if you can't see Lee Rocker or CT, both of those should be great, but one has to win. My pick is The Romantics.

Just got back from seeing them play in Detroit AND Las Vegas--The postcard picture actually shows Clem Burke as the drummer.... all of the other photos show the current drummer, Brad Elvis. If you've never seen Brad perform, you are in for a treat! :-) He blends in perfectly with Wally, Mike & Coz, and a blast to watch. The Romantics sound better and better every time I've seen them in the past few years, and I'm really sorry I can't make it to this show. :-( When they came out with their last album "61/49" they showed us that they are still out there writing songs and rocking it out. One thing for certain, The Romantics enjoy and love what they are doing and it clearly shows in their enthusiasm and energy--add an excited crowd and you can feel the electricity in the air! :-) Hopefully, there will be enough time for them to do a few encores at this show, because if it's anything like the past few shows, the crowd will be begging for more when their set is done!
